My friend analyzed my book Florid Eyes: A Novel like he is writing a thesis on a piece of literature. He called me the “mother” of Violet (‘Sup Daenerys? )and even dissected my feelings for Arnold and Josh, the two very important male characters in the book.
He said Arnold, the strong, ruthless, powerful, calm authority figure is who I THINK I should love, but the sometimes fragile and impetuous Josh is who I REALLY love.
He does have a point. People always say women like men they can look up to or even worship, and men are intimidated by smart women. Arnold represents protection because he is mature and rich and is a potential provider. Josh, on the other hand, is a bit weak at times. He is not stupid, but he gets outshone by Violet’s intelligence quite often. He isn’t the best in combat, and he doesn’t take disappointments very well either.
Many of my readers said they think Josh would be more likeable if I made him physically stronger and didn’t make Violet save the day all the time, but this is what draws me to their relationship and what makes me believe they’re perfect for each other. Josh sees Violet as his equal. He needs her as much as she needs him. Violet isn’t below him or above him. Violet is beside him.
