Quotes that changed my life

One of the things I love about Facebook and Pinterest is the unlimited amount of great quotes being shared every day. I’m like a motivation quote sharing machine, always sharing words of wisdom that I found inspiring or coming up with my own humble insights.

Some quotes really do mean a lot to me, helping me get through so many personal crises. The most important of all, of course, are those from Steve Jobs. They pretty much stopped me from killing myself, literally and figurative, moons ago and helped me become this persistent person that I am today. Some of the quotes are so deep-seated in my mind that I don’t even have to read them anymore. They’ve become part of me. I hope they can help you to become a better person too. Enjoy!

1. Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

2. Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.

3. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.

by Steve Jobs

4. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

by Steve Jobs

5. I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

by Steve Jobs

6. I want to put a dent in the universe.

by Steve Jobs

7. No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

by Eleanor Roosevelt

8. Do what you feel in your heart to be right- for you’ll be criticized anyway. You’ll be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.

by Eleanor Roosevelt

9. What would you do if you weren’t afraid?

by Sheryl Sandberg

10. If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, you don’t ask what seat. You just get on.

by Sheryl Sandberg

11, When looking for a life partner, my advice to women is date all of them: the bad boys, the cool boys, the commitment-phobic boys, the crazy boys. But do not marry them. The things that make the bad boys sexy do not make them good husbands. When it comes time to settle down, find someone who wants an equal partner. Someone who thinks women should be smart, opinionated and ambitious. Someone who values fairness and expects or, even better, wants to do his share in the home. These men exist and, trust me, over time, nothing is sexier.

by Sheryl Sandberg

12, Why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me.

by J. K. Rowling

13. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

by Nelson Mandela

14. I wanted to be a certain kind of a woman. I became that kind of woman.

by Diane von Furstenburg

15. A mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone

by George R.R. Martin

16. A lion does not concern himself with the opinions of the sheep.

by George R.R. Martin

About Nicky

Nicky English is a journalist, an educator, a podcaster, a couch potato, a dreamer, and a child at heart. Born in Hong Kong, she received intensive writing training at The University of Iowa, where she double-majored in journalism and political science. Apart from the Hawkeye State, she’s lived in Chicago and Philadelphia. When she was a guest student at Georgetown University, she fell in love with Washington, D.C.
